Standing in the Forest

Plunging into knee-deep snow
I wade through the ditch
to stand beneath the pine and larch.
Silence nestles in the branches
and hangs on the frost —

Breathing deeply
I savour the pristine air
rushing into my lungs.
The snow explodes
in a burst of sparkles.
For one moment
in this Eden of the North
I am Eve.
